External HDD

Hey fellas, looking for assistance in purchasing an external drive to support my laptop.

So far Ive had a gander at a Western Digi 500gig, and just getting a case and buying a Seagate. Both run external power (which is good cause i dont really want to draw it from my laptop aye).

Im either going to get them off ebay, but harris give some good quotes and theres a store locally apparently:
<a href="http://www.ht.com.au/N/0/keyword/western+digital/part/T9002-My-Book-Essential-Edition-WDG1U5000-Hard-drive-500-GB-external-Hi-Speed-USB-7200-rpm-buffer-16-MB/detail.hts" target="_blank">WD 500gig</a>
<a href="http://www.ht.com.au/N/Computers/part/U5323-Seagate-Barracuda-720010-Hard-drive-500-GB-internal-35-ATA-100-7200-rpm-buffer-16-MB/in_merch/Best+Sellers+-+Computers/detail.hts" target="_blank">Seagate 500gig</a>

At the moment I'm probably going with the WD, never had any problems with them in the past and seems a good package for external.
Their both pretty close in specs and price, just looking for a second opinion.

Cheers for your time fellas

Re: External HDD

depends what the price difference is. you could probably get a better deal at a computer fair and im not sure but i thought i saw office works had a 500gb external for 180. i got my 500gb external at a computer fair for 180 and since all i use it for is storage its working fine.. i dunno how it would fuck up as all it does is sit there.
id shop around. maybe even look around a bit more than just going to harris

Re: External HDD

Had a look around this arvo, the WD My Book is about $250 retail, which is a bit more than I expected. Found some dodgy basic entry level one for about 200 bucks and Harris had a LaCie on special for $200, marked down from 300.
Apparently Lacie use seagate HDD anyway, one of them own each other or some crap, which explains why seagate have no external hard drives on the market. Both have the exact same specs, apprently it runs quieter and businesses use the Lacie more, so i asked em to hold it for me till the weekend. Its cheaper and better apparently, the only reason i could see buying the My Book would be for looks, which is the same thing the dude said - alot of students buy it.
For $ 50 sake, ill be buying the Lacie. Get a warrantly with it too, something you probably wont get at a Computer Fair dogra ..?
Cheers for the help fellas, ill let you know of any issues

Bought the external on the weekend, set it up no worries, currently filling her up with movies and gear from the network. Let you know how it goes - Ando

Re: External HDD

I know this thread is somewhat old, but what size storage are most ppl i.e. those that don't max their monthly quotas due to dl-ing, using these days?

Re: External HDD

ive got about 2tb of storage as well. got about 300gb left i think. only 50gb monthly limit here but i get shit off my mates as well so it builds up. i like having the option of keeping everything and only deleting it if i choose to.
